Marvin Nachlis

Marvin Nachlis

When Marvin Nachlis was in high school he took a career aptitude test that said he was going to be a teacher and a coach. So he did what any nice Jewish boy would do.

He became a lawyer.

But, as a life long sports fan with an incredible memory for stats and almost perfect recall for where he was when a particular record was broken and for which teams had Jewish player on them, Marvin’s coaching aptitude was always in him. It was through coaching his kids' sports teams that it started to show itself.

In 1995, Marvin had the opportunity to coach his first Maccabi basketball team at the Los Angeles games. For the next 14 years he and his coaching partner Marc Newman coached hundreds of Long Beach’s Jewish teens. And in the process Marvin realized what he really wanted to do with his life.

So, after 25 years of practicing law, Marvin made a change and became a high school math teacher and girls basketball coach at Long Beach’s Jordan High School. A job he loved until his death in 2013 from ALS.

He would have loved to have seen the Maccabi games come to Long Beach and it is with great admiration and respect we hold the JCC Maccabi ArtsFest® 2018 in his memory.

Until the 2018 JCC Maccabi ArtsFest® Begins!
