Join the Fun of Stuhlbarg Summer Stock

Posted on Friday, May 8, 2015 at 8:00:00 am

Stuhlbarg Summer Stock is going to be a little different this year! Instead of rehearsing during the day, we will be rehearsing in the evenings from 5:30-800pm! That gives you a chance to participate in Camp Komaroff or other day activies and still do Summer Stock at night! This year's Summer Stock production provides opportunities for teens to participate in singing, dancing, acting, prop and costume prep, set design, and more. Five weeks of preparation lead up to performances on Wed, July 29; Thurs, July 30; Sat, August 1; and Sun, August 2. Summer Stock runs from June 29-August 2. 5:30-8:00pm Auditions will take place during the first week. Teens must be registered for Summer Stock in order to audition.

From the TONY Award-winning songwriting team of Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (Seussical, Ragtime) comes the Olivier Award-winning Once on This Island. This highly original and theatrical Caribbean adaptation of the popular fairy tale “The Little Mermaid” garnered eight TONY nominations for its Broadway run, including Best Musical, Book and Score. Ti Moune, a peasant girl, rescues Daniel, a wealthy boy from the other side of the island, with whom she falls in love. Unbeknownst to Ti Moune, the pompous gods who preside over the island make a bet with one another over which is stronger, love or death, the stakes being Ti Moune's life. When she pursues Daniel, who has returned to his people, Ti Moune is shunned because of her lowly status. Her determination and capacity to love, though, is not enough to win Daniel's heart and Ti Moune pays the ultimate price; but the gods turn Ti Moune into a tree that grows so strong and so tall, it breaks the wall that separates the societies and ultimately unites them.

About the Director: Matthew Vincent Julian has been acting for most of his life.  He started acting seriously in middle school and has never stopped.  Matt is a prominent member of the local theater community and has performed in Hollywood and in Off Broadway productions.  He was trained in acting by the chair of CSULB's theatre department, Hugh O’Gormen, and by some of the most talented members of the Long Beach acting community.  He is also trained in physical theater techniques and acrobatics. Matthew has taught drama classes for children at the Jewish community center from ages 6-14.  He has also created and run an improv team for Millikan High School.  Matthew wants to create Once on This Island as a collaborative process by all involved. He believes that the show is an active dialog between the director, actors and audience.

Matt  wants all the actors to be pushed to the limits of what they think they can do.  Everyone should walk away from this process better at what they do when they started, and of course with great memories of a fabulous summer!

Matt can't wait to bring this play to life with all of you!
