Staff Spotlight: Fred Johnson
Interview with Fred Johnson, Fitness & Wellness Manager
Fred Johnson came to the AJCC this past January with a background in fitness and personal training consultation. Originally from Los Angeles, Fred has had a varied and fascinating career! Fred went to high school in Atlanta and got his Bachelor of Science degree in Sports Management from North Carolina State. From there he moved to San Diego and then played professional baseball in Japan for three years. After some injuries, he finally hung up the sneakers and cleats. Because of his own experiences with sports rehab, he developed a passion for personal training by learning about Occupational Therapy and Functional Sports Therapy. “That’s when I fell in love with the fitness industry,” Fred says. “And I got my certification in personal training from National Association of Sports Medicine.”
As a fitness consultant, Fred had his own company, which he ran for 12 years, and he still does consulting. As a consultant, Fred worked with Hollywood Sports, designing their sales and membership department. Before that he opened 6 franchises for Planet Fitness Franchisee Group. “One of my main clients was Townsend Public Affairs, so I was able to do community relations and public outreach for the Oakland Raiders. After 10 years together, I married my longtime girlfriend, Tashanda. That’s when I knew it was time to settle down—no more traveling and hanging around single athletes. As a newlywed I needed to be close to home, with a saner schedule. I wanted to home more for my kids. My daughter graduated from high school last year, and my son will be a Junior.”
Fred is also very clear on why he came to work for the Alpert JCC, “I knew I wanted to be involved in the community and do something impactful, and I like the community outreach aspect of working at The AJCC. I share Jeffrey Rips vision of creating a community that is welcoming to each and all, a community that provides a great place for the residents of greater Long Beach to call their home.
“One thing that stands out for me here is the impact we have on the Senior community. I didn’t work with many seniors in my previous jobs. I love their personalities and their stories. One guy, for example, is a WWII veteran. It’s so impressive to meet people who have done so much for our country. I love talking to this guy—and now he comes with his wife, who is 25 years younger. He still has it!”
And Fred has a lot of plans for the future: “I hope to reach out to Gen X and provide a place for them to come work out and feel at home as well. I want to build up the personal training department more. I want to help develop other fitness professionals, and group fitness instructors. I also plan to do different series of updated group fitness classes and see what our members are interested in, things like Barre Above. An adult basketball league is something else I’d like to get going.
“One of the programs we recently did was Ride for the Living, which incorporated our Jewish values and connection with Poland. It was very well-received. All the bikes were full, and we raised $400 for that community in Poland. People can still donate to that if they want. It was a great thing to have everyone so connected.”
I believe very strongly in providing health and wellness education to our programming for members. I hope to bring in fitness professionals to give seminars regarding functional aging, nutritional balance. The AJCC is a great place to work. I love my colleagues. We have a great staff, and I am excited about the opportunities for the future.”
