Jewish Festival and Open House draws hundreds!

The heat didn’t bother anyone at the Alpert JCC Jewish Festival held on Sunday, June 25, 2017; they were having too much fun! The Alpert JCC was abuzz with activity and the sounds of laughter and excitement as young and old alike enjoyed samplings of our Jewish traditions: matzah ball soup, lox and bagels, kugel, Jewish gifts and jewelry, and even Israeli dancing. In addition, Rabbi Engel taught the traditional practice of tefillin wrapping (quite educational!), and Kedma Cantor, the J’s Assistant Director of Operations for ECE (see article this issue), taught the art of challah making.

In addition to the Jewish Festival, the building was busy with a community-wide open house, a silent art auction, building and preschool tours, special membership rates for on-the-spot signups, basketball registration, and a Swim-a-thon to Israel to help raise funds for the Jr. Swim Team!  Visitors and members alike had a great time as they learned a little bit about all the great things the J has to offer. There was henna body painting, swimming, a BBQ on the pool deck, arts & crafts, cookie decorating, and face painting.  Something for everyone!

The entire day was free and open to the community, and members had an excellent opportunity to bring guests and show off what a great place we have here. It was very exciting to see visitors from all over Long Beach enjoying the pool, learning a little about Jewish culture, watching a martial arts demo, or even participating in a free fitness class.

According to one of the J’s new members, “One of the best things about the day for me was watching the children delight in getting their faces painted or splashing around in the pool. The kids are just so precious. And it’s great they’re so involved. They are the future!” Another visitor commented, “Who knew there was so much here?! The pool is fantastic! And there’s so much diversity. I’m definitely coming back with my niece and nephews, and I hope they’ll sign up for camp. That just looks like it’s a blast.”

If you missed this year’s Jewish Festival/Open House, we hope to do it again next year. And everyone can check out the pictures on Facebook! In the meantime, don’t miss the Member Appreciation BBQ on August 15. The kugel may not be there, but the ruach will!
