Member Spotlight: Marc Newman

Maccabi

For over 20 years, Marc Newman has been the face of JCC Maccabi here at the Alpert JCC. The JCC Maccabi Games are an Olympic-style sporting competition held each summer in North America. It is the second largest organized sports program for Jewish teenagers in the world. An active JCC member since 1977, Marc first came to the JCC after his divorce in 1977 because, he explains, “I needed a place to go to meet Jewish people. I joined the Jewish singles and I never looked back. I met a lot of people here and made a lot of friends. When I remarried, the kids were coming here for camp and swimming and I got involved with their activities.” Then, in 1994, Marc got the call that would change his life and his connection to the J.  “Marvin Nachlis called and invited me to coach Maccabi basketball, and I’ve been doing it ever since. Marvin and I coached basketball together for about 14 years...

Staff Spotlight: Herlina Fraher

Herlina Fraher is one of the AJCC’s fabulous accountants. You have probably met her and her infectious laugh if you’ve ever had to go into the accounting office. Herlina has a wonderful way of putting everyone at ease. She grew up in Jakarta, Indonesia and after high school went to Cal State Long Beach as an exchange student. “I chose Long Beach,” she explains, “because my cousin was a professor at Cal State Long Beach. I was married very young, at 20, and the next year I had my son. I took some time off of college to take care of him and then went back to school when he was 5. I got my degree in accounting and went to work for Cemex, a Mexican multinational building materials company. I worked there for 6 years and met my current husband, Jack. I didn’t want to work in the same place as him, so I started temping and was eventually placed at the AJCC. I loved it here, so I stayed!”
