In this school of thought, the body is seen as being in a healthy state when it has a harmonious and balanced flow of Qi. By manipulating specific points on the body that correspond to pathways of the Qi, acupuncture helps to realign the Qi when it has been disrupted.
Acupuncture has been a primary form of health care for thousands of years in Japan and China. The instruments used in acupuncture treatments are very thin needles, about the width of a hair. Acupuncture needles are designed not to cut the skin and do not hurt when inserted properly. The tingling or other sensations associated with acupuncture are thought to signify the Qi returning to the body.
